How we test VPNs: our full 2026 methodology

Every ranking on VPN Verdict starts with a subscription bought at retail price, using a fresh payment card and a throwaway email. We do not accept free accounts, and we do not tell providers when a review round is starting.

Speed testing runs from three physical U.S. locations — Dallas, New York and Seattle — on 1 Gbps residential fibre. We measure the direct baseline first, then repeat with the VPN enabled on WireGuard, IKEv2 and OpenVPN, connecting to the nearest server, a mid-distance server and a long-haul server in Frankfurt.

For streaming, we manually load U.S. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max and Prime Video on both desktop Chrome and an Apple TV. Any provider that fails on more than one platform loses its streaming badge for that month.

Privacy assessments look at three things: the provider's jurisdiction, whether there is an independent no-logs audit within the last 24 months, and how transparently past security incidents have been handled. A great app cannot make up for a shaky privacy posture.

Finally, we live with each VPN for at least a week — using it on our own laptops, phones, routers and consoles. Recommendations reflect real daily use, not spec sheets.
